Izu Shaboten Zoo

Located at the foot of the national natural monument Mount Omuro, Izu Shaboten Zoo is a world-class unique theme park where over 140 species of animals coexist with approximately 1,500 varieties of cacti collected from around the globe. Inside the park, peacocks and squirrel monkeys roam freely, surprising visitors with their presence. The experience of interacting with animals at such close proximity—almost within arm’s reach—offers an “Unseen” sense of wonder that overturns the conventional concept of a zoo.

In particular, the “Original Capybara Open-Air Bath,” which began here in 1982, has become a famous winter tradition in Izu that attracts passionate attention even from overseas. The adorable sight of capybaras relaxing in the hot tub continues to heal the hearts of many, regardless of nationality. The park is also packed with activities that stimulate the five senses, such as Japan’s first “Animal Boat Tours,” where you observe animals while navigating among islands in a pond, and the “Cactus Harvesting Workshop,” where you can choose your favorite cacti to create an original potted arrangement. Passing through the five pyramid-shaped greenhouses reveals exotic deserts and jungles, with new discoveries awaiting at every step. Please find your own special story in this place where the vitality of animals and the sculptural beauty of plants merge.
